For instance, in the 1870s, the militia was called up to protect a prisoner and they opened fire on a crowd on Exchange Street and killed several men. A little over a decade later, in the 1880s, a series of explosions caused by naphtha leaking into the sewer destroyed several large buildings in the High Falls area and caused panic in the streets.
If you are looking for lighter articles, you can read about the Churchville woman who left $25,000 to her parrot in the early 1900s, or about the company that was going to build a compressed air storage facility at the lower falls in 1880 to power the city.
Also located in the “An American City Series” is a collection of reconstituted local cookbooks from 1880 to 1911. Unlike others who “reprint” cookbooks by making photo copies, Laughing Cat Books takes them down to the bare text and resets them in easy to read bold type. In addition, we supplement the cookbook with a glossary, advertisements and actual pictures of taken around the year the cookbook was first published.
