Until about 250 years ago, nobody paid much attention to what women said. The thoughts and words of women, with a few exceptions, were pretty much intentionally ignored in a society controlled by men and other women. At about the time of the American Revolution, a little more attention was being paid to some women’s ideas and opinions. In these cases, most of the women were royalty or married to powerful men.
In the mid to late 1800s, women writers were becoming successful and the suffrage movement was under way, but still the quotes recorded were not abundant. When women got the vote in 1920, more women were starting to realize the possibilities in their lives and their words, yet it was still a society controlled by men.
In the late 1960s, Women’s Liberation got more women talking and thinking and a great deal more was recorded and remembered. Women’s Words, Women’s Wisdom is a collection of the best quotes and meaningful thoughts by women over the last 2000 years.
